Lessons Learned From Verizon: Implementing Microservices

What type of platform does it take to live stream the world's biggest media and sports events to mobile devices? In this webinar with special guest Christopher Webster, Associate Fellow at Verizon, you can get a feel of what it takes to power one of Verizon's latest offerings, its go90 platform.

Go90 is based on a web services platform designed to support Verizon’s original and exclusive content with rich interactive experiences for live events (for example NFL, NBA, and BeIN) and video on demand.

In order to support the traffic spikes surrounding live sports and music events, the go90 web services team employs a Microservices architecture, written in Scala and based on Play Framework from Lightbend. This presentation will provide an overview of the current architecture, then focus on techniques (such as extensive use of default values from failed service calls) used to ensure a performant and available platform that was built starting with Play Framework.

Prior to Verizon he was a Computer Scientist working for the Mission Control Technologies project at NASA's Ames Research Center. Chris also was a senior staff engineer at Sun Microsystems serving as lead engineer for Project zembly, the code in the cloud development and transparently scalable deployment environment. He has also been the technical lead for a variety of NetBeans tools projects,. Chris is an author of the NetBeans Field Guide and Assemble the Social Web With Zembly. He is a founder of jexamples.com, a search site dedicated to semantically correct searching for Java code examples mined from open source projects.
